Introduction to I & II Kings
The books of I & II Kings tell of the history of the kings of Israel and Judah. I Kings deals with the death of King David and the reign of the wise king Solomon. Solomon built and dedicated the temple. After his death came the division of Israel under Rehoboam and Jeroboam. I Kings is where we can find the miracles and ministry of Elijah. In II Kings, Elisha becomes Elijah’s successor and does even more mighty works.
We also learn from these two books how that sin can destroy even the best nation. The nation that forgets God will be turned into hell. (Psalm 9:17) Seeing how Israel had fallen should cause us to pray for our country. We must turn back to the true and living God, forsaking all others for Him alone. America has been made great in its beginning because it was founded on Biblical principles. It has been a haven for all people. Looking back on its history you can come to only one conclusion, God raised America up. By looking at I & II Kings, we should learn to serve God with all our heart no matter what those around us are doing. We can learn from I & II Kings to “be wary of success. . . not only how we get there, but how we fare after getting there. We must build on a good foundation and not overlook small but basic principles.” (Quote taken from Dr. Tom Wallace.)
