Devotion 3 – Lesson 2

Devotions Book 3

Lesson 2

Knowledge (week 1-4)

The Building Blocks: God’s Principles

“…giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  2 Peter 1:5-8

Knowledge / Week 1

Day 1 / Proverbs 1:1-7

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise saying.  Most of the book was written and edited by king Solomon of Israel, to whom God gave great wisdom.  The Jewish people learned and applied these practical teaching to their everyday life.  During His earthly ministry, Jesus often used Proverbs to reveal God’s truth in His teaching.   The summation of the first paragraph of this first chapter says that “the fear of the Lord” is the beginning of knowledge.  This is the reverence a child of God feels toward his Heavenly Father.

What are some evidences that I fear the Lord?

Day 2 / Psalm 46:8-11

When Christ, the Prince of Peace, rules the earth, all the man-made weapons of warfare will be destroyed.  He will break the bow, cut the spear in two pieces, and burn the chariot.  (These are representative of the weapons in our arsenals today).  He, the all-powerful Lord of the universe, will take His rightful place as ruler.  The psalmist tells us to be still (a calm waiting in the presence of the Lord) and know (fully recognize) that He is God.  We are to know who He is, what He is like.

What must I do to “be still and know God” this week?  What things do I know already about God’s character and his ways?

Day 3 / Proverbs 15:14

God says that the person who really understands what is important in life will diligently learn more about Him.  He will “seek knowledge” – finding out more about God’s character and His ways.  He will not waste time on the foolish things of life, the things that have no eternal value.

What can I do to “seek knowledge” of God?  How can I be more effective in seeking knowledge of God?

Day 4 / John 7:14-17

During one of the annual Jewish feast, Jesus went into the temple court and began to teach.  The Jews were amazed by what He said.  They wondered how He knew so much, not having studied in the great theological schools in Jerusalem.  He answered by explaining that His teaching was not His own, but that which the Father had sent Him into the world to give.  Then, He shared an important principle: knowing God’s truth requires choosing to do God’s will.  In essence, He told the Jews: “If you are willing to obey my truth (doctrine), then you will know it.”

Am I willing to obey god’s truth even before He shows it to me?

Day 5 / II Chronicles 1:7-12

God gave Solomon the chance of a lifetime.  He told him: “Choose anything you want, and I will give it to you.”  Solomon, who had just been crowned as the new king of Israel, knew what was really important.  He asked for wisdom and knowledge, so that he would be able to effectively rule his people.  Because God was so pleased with Solomon’s request, He blessed him with more wealth and honor than any man before him or after him.

If God were to say to me, “Choose anything you want, and I will give it to you.” What would I honestly ask for?

Day 6 / Proverbs 2:1-6

The basic teaching of these verses is the same as that which Jesus taught on one occasion in the temple, when He said, “If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine (teaching), whether it be of God” (John 7:17).  God gives knowledge; and in the knowledge He gives there is real understanding of life.

What wisdom and understanding of life has God given me this month?  This week?

Knowledge / Week 2

Day 1 / Psalms 139:1-24

The intensity of David’s relationship to God is revealed in the Psalms he wrote.  In this psalm, probably written during a time of trial, David looks at his smallness and God’s greatness.  The first six verses tell of God’s omniscience, the fact that He knows everything.  The next section, verses 7 to 13 tell of God’s omnipresence, the fact that He is everywhere.  The remaining verses are David’s response to what he realizes about God.

How is God pleased with what He knows about me?  How is He displeased?

Day 2 / I Samuel 2:1-3

Hannah was a godly Jewish woman who was childless for many years.  She pleaded earnestly with God to give her a son, promising to dedicate him to the Lord’s service.  God honored her request and she bore a son whom she named Samuel.  He grew up to become a great leader of His people.  When Hannah dedicated Samuel to God, she said many important things.  One of her statements focuses on God’s knowledge.  Verse 3 tells us quite plainly that God not only knows everything we do, He knows why we do it.  He sees the reasons and motives behind our actions.  God knows our hearts.

Understanding that God knows everything I do and why I do it, what actions and attitudes do I see that need to be changed?

Day 3 / Daniel 2:19-23

Daniel was a young Jew who was taken into Babylonian captivity.  God gave Daniel special knowledge, enabling him to gain a position in the king’s court (Daniel 1:17-25).  A new king, Nebuchadnezzar, dreamed a very troubling dream which he could not understand.  He demanded all his wise men (including Daniel) to tell him both what he dreamed and what it meant.  If they couldn’t do it, he would kill all of them.  Daniel and his friends prayed that God would give them the answer, ad He did.

Many times we need special wisdom and direction from God.  In such times, we must not fail to ask Him.

Is there some problem or situation in my life for which I need special wisdom or direction from God this week?  Will I pray now and ask God for His wisdom?

Day 4 / Matthew 6:5-8

This passage is part of Jesus’ well-known Sermon on the Mount.  In these particular verses there are some of His instructions on prayer.  One of the significant things He says is that God knows what we need even before we ask Him (v.8).  So, then why do we need to pray?  Because when we pray, we show that we love and trust Him to meet our needs.

What does God know I need, that I will now trust Him for it by faith?

Day 5 / John 2:23-25

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, knows what man is like.  He understands how we think, how we feel, how we act and react.  He can relate to us because He became one of us.  In fact, He knows us better than we know ourselves.  Through His Word, He shows us what we are really like.  He does so because He wants us to obey Him and become conformed more to His image.

Looking within myself, what do I see that is not like Jesus?  What do I see that is like Jesus?

Day 6 / Proverbs 1:22-23; 28-29

Those who make fun at God’s Word, refusing to accept it as the truth, will realize too late that they were wrong.  God will not respond to their cries, for in rejecting His Word, they reject the knowledge that matters the most – the knowledge of God Himself.

Am I in any way refusing to accept God’s Word as the final authority for my life?  What have I learned about God, having accepted the authority of His Word in My life?  What blessings have resulted?

Knowledge / Week 3

Day 1 / II Timothy 3:10-17

This letter was probably the last written by the apostle Paul.  Timothy was especially dear to Paul, so his final instructions to his “son in the faith” are extremely important.  Paul warned timothy of the great dangers facing him, and he encouraged him and built up his faith.  He compared Timothy to a soldier enduring hardness for the sake of Christ.  Paul made it clear that Timothy needed to be a “workman approved unto God, rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15).  Paul knew that God’s Word would be “profitable” to Timothy for teaching, rebuking, correction and training him in righteousness (v.16).

How has God’s Word been “profitable” to me?  How have I benefitted by God’s correction and guidance?

Day 2 / Job 23:8-12

Job went through some really terrible experiences.  He lost his houses, his cattle herds, even his children.  Yet, after all he had suffered, he recognized that the personal, all-knowing God was at work in his life.  Job was aware that God was purifying his life through these experiences, like gold is purified in fire.  Understanding this, he did not forsake God’s Word.  In fact, he valued God’s Word above physical food.  He consistently meditated in the Word and followed its instruction.

How has God’s Word become more valuable to me?  What have I learned about God through my trials and testing?

Day 3 / Isaiah 66:1-2

God says, “The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.”  He is so great!  Everything in the universe is His creation.  Yet, incredibly, He notices us, and he loves us.  But there is one special kind of person He looks for: one who “trembles” at His Word (v.2).  This means to respect, honor and fear disobeying what He has said, putting it in first place.

In what ways do I “tremble” at God’s Word?  What evidence is there in my life that I fear disobeying God’s Word?

Day 4 / Proverbs 13:13

This proverb sends out a clear warning.  Dishonor God’s Word and you will be destroyed.  But, on the other side, a promise is given.  Honor and respect God’s Word and you will be rewarded.  Knowing God’s Word, then respecting and obeying it will reap immeasurable blessings.

How am I honoring and respecting God’s Word?  Have I dishonored God’s Word in any way?  What have I reaped?

Day 5 / John 8:30-32

A disciple is one who devotes himself to following and learning from another person.  The disciple’s goal is to become as much like his master as possible.  We, as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, are to follow Him and learn from Him, so that we can become like Him.  We do this by “continuing in His Word” – consistently studying and obeying it.  As we do this, we will experience real knowledge of the truth and become more like Christ.

As a result of studying and obeying God’s Word, how have I become more like Christ?  Has anyone told me recently that they admire a Christ-like characteristic in my life?

Day 6 / II Timothy 2:15

Paul told Timothy, his young son in the faith, to “study to show (himself) approved unto God.”  How did Timothy do this?  What were his study methods?  Well, we can be sure of one thing, his “textbook” was God’s Word, the Bible.  He devoted himself to “rightly dividing” (correctly handling) the Word of God.  He studied to show himself approved by God – not to be approved by men.

Has my motive for studying God’s Word been to please and impress others or has it been to gain God’s approval?  Why am I reading God’s Word today and why will I read it tomorrow?

Knowledge / Week 4

Day 1 / Philippians 3:1-10

Philippians was written by Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome.  He had visited Philippi three times on his missionary

journeys and was instrumental in establishing a church there.  It was the first church in what is now Europe.  The letter is very personal, as indicated by the use of the pronouns you, your and ye more than 70 times.  The theme of Paul’s message is Christian joy.  Throughout the letter he tells the Philippians to “rejoice.”  Such a life of joy, Paul explains, is the result of devotion to the goal of knowing God’s Son and becoming like Him.

How am I becoming like Jesus? (What Christ-like attitudes are in me?)  What is it costing me to become more Christ-like?

Day 2 / John 17:1-3

John 17 is the real “Lord’s Prayer.”  That is, it was a prayer prayed to God the Father by the Lord Jesus Christ.  In it, Jesus poured out His deepest longings for believers.  In the first phrases of His prayer, Jesus states a powerful truth: to know Him is to know Life – eternal life.  He did not mean for one to merely know about Him, but to really know Him by believing in Him and receiving Him as Saviour and Lord.

Do I know Jesus as Saviour and Lord?  Am I rejoicing and praising God for eternal life?

Day 3 / I Corinthians 2:1-2

When the apostle Paul first visited Corinth on his missionary journeys he did not proclaim the gospel with impressive oratory.  He made no fancy speeches.  His only concern was to communicate the simple message of Jesus.  He wanted them to know Him – the crucified Lord.  Like Paul, when we share God’s truth with others, we should be interested in people knowing Jesus, not in their knowing and being impressed with us.

What kind of witness have I been sharing about Jesus to the lost?  To other Christians?

Day 4 / I John 2:3-5

I John tells us in straightforward terms how we can know that we know God.  In fact, know is the key word in this dynamic book.  One of the things John singles out as an indication that we know God is our obedience to Him.  If we say we love God, but do not Keep His Word, we are liars, according to John.  But if we obey His Word, God’s love is “perfected” (fully developed) in us.  This shows us that we truly know Him.

What evidence is there in my life that I really love God?  What is one thing I can do this week to show my love for God?

Day 5 / Acts 4:5-13

Peter and John were simple, uneducated fishermen.  But there was something very special about them.  They spoke with boldness and authority, and performed miraculous deeds.  Where did they get such power?  There was only one explanation, they had been with Jesus.  They knew Him, and knowing Him changed their lives.

How has knowing Jesus Christ changed my life?  How can I get to know Jesus better today?

Day 6 Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus wants us to really know Him; so He extends to us an invitation to come to Him, to learn of Him, to take His yoke upon us.  A yoke is a large, heavy collar in which are placed the heads of two oxen.  In Jesus’ day, there were many oxen teams used for farming, pulling carts and doing many other jobs.  In any team, one ox was the leader, the other the follower.  One pulled alongside the other.  So it is when we take the “yoke” upon us in our relationship to Christ.  We submit ourselves to work with Him; we pull alongside Him, our leader.

Am I a willing follower of Jesus, pulling alongside Him in the yoke, or am I trying to pull on my own?
