The MATURE MAN

Lesson 2

The Blueprint (week 1-6)

The Blueprint:

God’s Word / Week 1

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (II Timothy 3:16-17)

Day 1/  II Timothy 3:14-17

This passage is part of a letter written by the apostle Paul to a young disciple named Timothy.  Two of Paul’s letters to Timothy are included in the New Testament.  These letters provide many practical instructions for living the Christian life.  The instruction in these verses deals with the importance of consistently living by God’s Word.  Paul refers to this as “continuing in… the Holy Scriptures” (v.14, 15).

How can I “continue in” (keep on doing) the things I have learned in God’s Word?

Day 2/ Nehemiah 8:1-3

In 444 B. C. Nehemiah led an expedition of Babylonian Jews to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of the city.  When the work was completed the people met to hear Ezra the priest read God’s Word.  They stood in the streets and listened attentively for several hours because they wanted to fully understand God’s message to them.

In what ways can I pay more attention to God’s Word this week?

Day 3/ Psalm 1:1-6

King David of Israel, who wrote this Psalm, was a “man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22).  Probably one reason he is so described is that he delighted himself in God’s Word.  In this passage, David says that one who meditates “day and night” on God’s Word is guaranteed of success and prosperity.

What specific steps can I take to meditate on God’s Word “day and night”?

Day 4/ John 5:39-47

Jesus encountered many problems with the Pharisees, a strict group of Jews.  They did not accept Him as the promised Messiah.  On this occasion, He challenged their belief in the Old Testament writings of Moses.  He explained to them that He was the true subject of the law.  Therefore, all the Old Testament sacrifices and ordinances pointed to Him.  He told them bluntly: “If you really believe Moses, you will believe me.”

The main purpose of God’s Word — Old Testament and New Testament — is to tell us about God’s Son, Jesus, so that we may believe and receive Him as Savior and Lord.

How well do I know Jesus?  What is the best way I can learn more about Him this week?

Day 5/ Psalm 119: 1-8

“Blessedness” — happiness — is the first promise of Psalm 119.  Of course, everyone wants to be happy.  But not everyone is willing to meet God’s condition for happiness.  His condition is: live by the teachings of His Word.  This is stated in various ways in this passage: “Walk in the law (Word) of the Lord …keep His testimonies (His Word) …keep His precepts (His Word) …keep His statutes (His Word) …respect all His commandments (His Word)…”

In what ways am I experiencing happiness because of my obedience to God’s Word?

Day 6/ Psalm 119: 9-16

The cleanliness of our bodies is very important, for dirtiness can cause disease and discomfort.  To stay healthy we practice good hygiene.  This keeps us clean on the outside; but what about the inside, the “inner man?”  How can we stay clean inside, to prevent spiritual disease and discomfort?  Here is the clear answer: take heed to God’s Word.  Simple obedience to His Word results in spiritual cleanliness and health.

In what areas of my life do I need to be spiritually cleansed?  What truth in God’s Word do I need to “take heed” to today?

God’s Word / Week 2

Day 1 / Luke 4:1-13

At the very beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, He was led by the Holy Spirit into a barren wasteland called “the wilderness.”  He spent forty days in that place, and during His time there He did not eat.  He was physically weak, and the devil came to tempt Him during His time of weakness.  Jesus’ response to the devil shows us how to deal with temptation in our lives.

How can I most effectively respond to temptation?

Day 2 / Psalm 119: 17-24

Some of the most beautiful, intense prayers recorded in God’s Word are very brief.  Perhaps the best known example is the publican’s prayer, “God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).  Another such prayer is recorded in verse 18 of today’s passage: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”  This prayer ought to be prayed every day by every believer.

Has God opened my spiritual “eyes?”  What “wondrous things” which He has shown me do I especially praise Him for today?

Day 3 / Psalm 119: 25-32

Running is a popular activity today, especially among businessmen trying to prevent heart attacks.  They know that medical research has proven that running strengthens the heart and enlarges its capability to work.  Similarly, “spiritual running” — obeying the teachings of God’s Word — is beneficial to the hidden heart of man, the soul (v. 32).

What specific truth or area of spiritual growth should I practice “running” today?

Day 4 / Hebrews 4: 12, 13

The apostle Paul instructed his spiritual “son”, Timothy, to be a “good soldier of Jesus Christ” (II Timothy 2:3).  In his letter to the Ephesians, he admonished them to “put on the whole armor of God” (Ephesians 6: 10-17) and equip themselves with the weapons of spiritual warfare — the shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit, which is God’s Word.  The writer of Hebrews (possibly the apostle Paul) also refers to God’s Word as a sword.  He says that it is “quick” (alive and active) and “powerful” (v. 12).

As Christians today, we too must be good soldiers of Jesus Christ, protected with the armor of God, armed with the sword of the Spirit — the Word of God.

How well experienced am I at using my “sword?”  How can I be prepared to use my “sword” at any moment?

Day 5 / Psalm 119: 33-40

We can only understand God’s Word with God’s help.  On our own, we are not able to discern the meaning of His commandments, His warnings, His promises.  He must give us understanding.  So we must daily ask Him, like David, “give me understanding and I shall keep thy law (obey thy Word)” (v. 34).

What specific truth of God’s Word could I pray for understanding today?

Day 6 / Psalm 119: 41-48

Truth is for sharing.  Every person we meet during the course of a lifetime needs to know the truth — God’s truth.  We share His truth through what we say, what we do, and especially through our attitudes.  Never should we be afraid to make known God’s message.  David said that he would speak of God’s testimonies (His Word) before kings, and not be ashamed (v. 46).

Will I share God’s truth today?  With whom?  What will I share?

God’s Word / Week 3

Day 1 / John 16: 7-15

A short time before His crucifixion, the Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples about the ministry of the Holy Spirit.  He explained to them that after His return to Heaven, the Holy Spirit would come and take Jesus’ place as their teacher.  He would guide them into the meaning of God’s Word.

How does the Holy Spirit “speak” to me as a believer today?

Day 2 / Psalm 119: 49-56

God’s Word is filled with promises to His children.  He knows that we are often sad, hurt, or disappointed.  So, He has given us His promises to cheer us, to heal us, to lift up our spirits.  His Word “quickens” us (v. 50); that is, it revives us and restores our faith in God.

What is the best thing I can do when I am sad, hurt, or disappointed?

Day 3/ Psalm 119: 57-64

Companionship is important, because our behavior is affected by those with whom we spend our time.  If we are companions with persons of bad character, we may be influenced to do bad things.  If we are companions with persons of good character, we will be positively influenced by their good testimony.  We must relate to all people, and love all people, but companionship must be reserved for those who are spiritual.  David said that he was a companion of those who fear the Lord (v. 63).

Are my companions those who fear the Lord (respect and honor Him)?

Day 4 / James 1: 21-24

Hearing God’s Word is important; but hearing is not enough.  It is also essential to do God’s Word.  James says that the believer who hears God’s Word, but does not respond in obedience to it is like a man who looks into a mirror, then walks away, forgetting what sort of image he saw.

Am I doing everything I am hearing (learning) from God’s Word?  What specific truths which God has shown me do I need to concentrate on obeying this week?

Day 5 / Psalm 119: 65-72

There is always a divine purpose in times of trial and affliction.  But often we do not see God’s reasons until the tears are dried.  Then what was blurred becomes clear in the light of God’s truth.  Spiritual testing is essential because it keeps us “on track” — it shows us the importance of obedience to God’s Word.  David said, “Before I was afflicted I went astray”. Later he was able to testify: “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes” (v. 67, 71).  Affliction, spiritual testing, is good for all believers, for it enables us to really learn and apply God’s Word.

In what ways have I been spiritually tested?  How did I benefit from it?

Day 6 / Psalm 119: 73-80

During the past decade, the art of meditation has become very popular in the western world.  The primary influence in the meditation craze is Transcendental Meditation, also called TM.  TM is nothing more than a pantheistic Eastern religion. ( The pantheist does not believe in a personal God, but says instead that “God is everything and everything is God”).  Every day, millions of Americans devote a solid block of time to the meditation ritual.  The key to their success in meditation is the constant repetition of a seemingly harmless word, called the mantra.  Repetition of the mantra supposedly shuts out the worldly influences.  Of course, meditation did not originate with TM or any other Eastern religion.  The practice originated with Old Testament believers, like David, who meditated in God’s Word (v. 78).  They did not repeat meaningless words; they reflected seriously on the Word, God’s truth.

On what Biblical truth will I meditate today?

God’s Word / Week 4

Day 1 / I John 5: 1-3

First John is a warm, expressive letter written by the apostle John to Christians living about 60 years after Jesus ascended into Heaven.  Its message is just as relevant to us today as it was for those believers of that generation.  The key word in this letter is “know”.  John’s emphasis is on knowing that we know Him — the Lord Jesus Christ.  One of the evidences that we know Him is that we keep His commands.

How will I respond to the commands of God’s Word?  How does my response to the commands of God’s Word strengthen my assurance in Him?

Day 2 / Psalm 119- 81-88

When we are afflicted it is easy to start feeling sorry for ourselves.  We think that we’re just not going to make it through in one piece.  David often felt the same way.  He compared himself to a leather bottle which shrivels up in the smoke (v. 83).  He experienced the same kind of frustrations we face today.  God gives us consolation in our trials but, more importantly, He gives us a reminder that we must always trust His Word.  No matter how bad the situation, God will come through.  He is faithful.

In what areas of life am I depending on God’s faithfulness today?

Day 3 / Psalm 119: 89-96

God’s Word is for today.  Its truth is relevant to every facet of our life.  David could also make this statement, for God’s Word was relevant to every facet of his life, too.  Why?  Because God’s Word is unchanging.  It is the same yesterday, today and forever, just like God Himself (Hebrews 13:8).  Forever, His Word is settled in heaven (v. 89).

In what specific ways is God’s Word relevant, alive and active in my life today?

Day 4 / Philippians 2: 12-16

Paul wrote this letter to the Philippians while he was being held prisoner by the cruel Roman emperor, Nero.  In spite of his unpleasant circumstances, he expressed joy to his fellow believers.  One of Paul’s deepest desires for the Philippians was that they would “hold forth the Word of Life” — living it and sharing it with others.

In what ways as I “holding forth the Word of Life?”

Day 5 / Psalm 119: 97-104

Our society highly values education.  One who succeeds in school is admired and respected for having gained knowledge.  However, according to the Bible, the education that really counts is not that which is gained in school.  Rather, it is that which is gained through meditation in God’s Word.  David said that knowing the Word made him wiser than his enemies (v. 98), wiser than his teachers (v. 99), and even wiser than the aged men (v. 100).

How am I allowing God’s Word to make me wiser?

Day 6 / Psalm 119: 105-112

Throughout the Scriptures God is associated with light.  Jesus Christ God’s Son, is called the true  light from God (John 1:9).  Christians are described as the light of the world, shining before men, so that God may be glorified (Matthew 5: 14-16).  The Bible, God’s written Word, is also a source of light.  Verse 105 of today’s passage begins: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  How can we know which way to go in life?  By following the path illuminated by God’s Word.

In what areas has God illuminated my path today?

God’s Word / Week 5

Day 1/ Psalm 19:7-11

These beautiful verses deal exclusively with God’s Word.  They were sung and recited by the ancient Hebrews in their worship services, yet the poetic rhythm of the verses can still be felt in our language today.  The key verse in the passage is verse 11, which is a “summary.” This verse tells how God’s Word warns us , and how we benefit by heeding its warnings.

Do I heed the warnings of God’s Word? How?

Day 2/ Psalm 119: 113-120

Everyone needs security.  The kinds of security we need vary as we grow older: the child needs the security of loving, understanding parents. The teenager needs the security of acceptance by family and friends.  A wife needs the security of her husband’s love.  A husband needs the security afforded by his role in the family.  But, more basic than these is the security we must find in God.  We need to realize, like the writer of this Psalm, that God is “…our hiding place and our shield” (v. 114).

Insecurity comes from placing trust in something impermanent, something which can be taken away.  Security results from placing trust in God and in the absolute truth of His Word.

What am I trusting in today? Am I placing confidence in anything or anyone that can be taken away from me?

Day 3/ Psalm 119: 121-128

At the end of the Vietnam war, when hundreds of American prisoners of war were released, many told of how much they missed God’s Word.  Since no Bibles were available, the prisoners reconstructed portions of God’s Word they had memorized.  They wrote these verses on tiny pieces of paper which were hidden from the enemy.  They learned to value God’s Word more than any other possession.  David gave a similar testimony: “I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold” (v.127).

How does my life prove that God’s Word is valuable to me?

Day 4/ I Thessalonians 2:13

Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians is filled with expressions of his gratitude for their response to the Word of God.  When he preached the truth to them, they received it as God’s message, not just as the words of mere men. (Acts 17:1-9)

When we hear or read God’s Word, we too need to respond to it as God’s message to us just as if He were sitting beside us talking to us.  He who made all things, He who sent His Son to be our Saviour — He it is who speaks to us through the Bible.

Since the Bible is God’s Word to me, how am I responding in respect and obedience to Him?

Day 5/ Psalm 119: 137-144

God’s Word can be described in so many ways.  In these brief verses, the psalmist says that God’s Word is “upright… pure… true… righteous” (v. 137,140, 142, 144). How closely this resembles Philippians 4:8 which says that we are to think on things that are “true… honest… just… pure…” God’s Word should occupy our thoughts.  His commandments should be our delight (v. 143).

What thoughts can I think today which are true, honest, just, and pure?

Day 6/ Psalm 119: 137-144

In the course of man’s existence, millions upon millions of books have been written.  Of this great number, a few books may be rightfully called masterpieces of literature.  The Bible, however, is in a category all its own.  It is the masterpiece, for it is the only truly perfect book.  As David said, it is “very pure” (v. 140).  All other books have imperfections of one sort or another, because they are the products of imperfect men.  The Bible on the other hand, is totally perfect, because it is the very Word of God.

How does realizing the Bible is perfect cause me to respond to it?

God’s Word / Week 6

Day 1 / II Corinthians 1: 18-22

This letter, which is the second from Paul to the Corinthians, was written by the apostle to explain his ministry.  He had been attacked by critics both inside and outside the church.  In these verses he backs up his character and conduct with the authority of all of God’s promises.

In light of my circumstances this week, which of God’s promises are most meaningful to me?

Day 2 / Psalm 119: 145-152

The man who wrote this psalm was so concerned about meditation on God’s Word that he stayed up all night to do so.  While the city slept, he prayed and thought on God’s message to him.  He set aside a special time so that he could know God’s Word better.

What special (extra) time will I set aside this week to read and think about God’s Word?

Day 3 / Psalm 119: 153-160

Throughout the Psalms, enemies are mentioned.  Many of these references relate to David’s enemies, who were trying to kill him (primarily King Saul and his soldiers).  When he was pressed from all sides, David put his trust in the promises of God’s Word.  When our enemies oppress us, whether by word or action or attitude, we must also take God at His Word and trust Him for deliverance.

Who are my “enemies?”  What promises of God can I claim in responding to them?

Day 4/ Colossians 3: 16, 17

God wants His Word to be a vital part of our lives.  He wants it to “dwell in (us) richly in all wisdom” (v. 16).  When His Word lives in us, His wisdom will guide us, and praises to Him will fill our hearts and minds.

In what ways has God’s Word been a vital part of my life this week?

Day 5 / Psalm 119: 161-168

In verse 162 of today’s passage, the psalmist writes, “I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil.”  Today we would call “great spoil” a “great treasure.”  Discovering truth in God’s Word is like discovering a fortune in gold, silver and precious stones.

What treasure have I discovered in God’s Word this month?

Day 6 / Psalm 119: 169-176

There are really only two ways to live: God’s way or our own way.  We can choose to believe and obey God or we can choose not to.  God leaves the decision with us.  May we pray like the Psalm writer, “Lord, I have chosen the way of thy precepts” (v. 173).

Which way have I chosen to live?  How does my life prove it?
