Number
The book of Numbers comes from the numbering of the people in chapters 1:5-49 and 26:4-51. Its setting is the wilderness. It is the fourth book written by Moses. In this book we see the events of the journey through the wilderness. The people of Israel could have entered Canaan in about 11 days after they left Egypt. Because of their lack of trust in God, they wandered for forty years in the wilderness. This warns us today to put our trust in God, no matter what we face.
In this book we see the events of the journey through the wilderness. Now Israel was to put to practice the teaching of Exodus and Leviticus. Israel was to be a separated people, coming under the authority of Jehovah. Moses is the great leader, but the people were to obey God. Many did not obey God and died in the wilderness. This shows us that you may have a great leader, but if the people in the pew do not obey, then there cannot be real revival.
The book of Numbers points to God’s sovereignty (He is in control), His patience, and His desire to bless His people. The greater part of Numbers refers to the second year after their exodus from Egypt. It tells how the camp was to be set up and the families who were to serve in the tabernacle. It also instructs them about cleanliness, health, Nazarite vows, etc. But as you study Numbers, keep looking for Jesus. He is a type of much of the religious activity. Notice what I call “blessing verses”. Example: Numbers 6:24-26. Notice also how the people complained. It even caused Moses to complain to the LORD. (Num. 11:1-15) See the spies’ report. How that ten spies did not trust God’s Word. God had brought them out of Egypt with great miracles to take them into Canaan. He has brought the believer out to take us to heaven. Therefore, be careful of complaining about life’s problems. Trust the LORD. Believe His Word. God had a plan for Israel and He has a plan for you. As you walk by faith through this “wilderness world”, keep your eyes on Jesus; your faith in His Word and walk the highway of holiness. So, if you are on a journey that seems to be a wilderness, perhaps God wants you to keep your eyes on Him by faith. TOTALLY TRUSTING HIM!
