Lesson 2

Godliness (week 1-4)

The Building Blocks: God’s Principles

“…giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  II Peter 1:5-8

Godliness

Godliness / Week 1

Day 1 / II Peter 3:9-14

This final chapter of II Peter was written to remind believers of some truths about Christ’s second coming.  Peter warns that scoffers will doubt the Lord’s Day, so will He keep His promise to return and He will judge the earth again.  But His final judgment will be one of fire, not water.  In that time, the earth will melt with “fervent heat.”

As Christians, we accept the end of this world as part of God’s plan for the ages.  Understanding what is going to happen, we set our affection on things above, not on things below.

Knowing what is going to happen to this world, how am I responding?  What are my values, motives, attitudes, etc.?

Day 2 / Psalm 4:3-4

Do you think you are something special?  Well, you are!  You are special because God loved you so much that He gave His only Son, Jesus, to be the sacrifice for your sins.  Then, when you believe and receive Him as your Saviour, you become something really special.  So special, in fact, that God sets you apart for Himself.  The godly, (which in this verse means the saved) are a special possession which God treasures.

As one of the redeemed, who have I been set apart for?  What have I been set apart from?

Day 3 / Micah 6:6-8

The prophet Micah asks some interesting questions in this passage.  Wanting to know what it takes to please God, he asks: Shall I come before the Lord with thousands of burnt offerings…ten thousand of rivers of olive oil…the offering of my firstborn?  And to all these difficult questions the answer is no.  What pleases God is not a lot of sacrifices like these mentioned by Micah.  Rather, He is pleased with a godly life, with a believer walking humbly before Him.

How am I pleasing God?  Is my life characteristic of a spirit of humility?

Day 4 / Romans 8:29

Becoming a godly person means becoming Christ-like.  This is the ultimate purpose for every believer.  He wants to conform us to “the image of His Son.”  In our actions, reactions, attitudes, in everything we do and say He wants us to be like Jesus.

Since becoming a Christian, how have I been conformed to the image of Christ (how have I become more Christ-like)?

Day 5 / Titus 2:11-14

God’s grace teaches us to say “no” to ungodliness and to the passions of the world.  In a positive sense, it shows us the necessity of living self-controlled, upright, godly lives – all the while living in expectation of Christ’s return.

How am I saying “no” to ungodliness and “yes” to godliness?

Day 6 / I Peter 1:14-16

One of the simplest and clearest commands of God’s Word is: be holy.  The simple, clear reason for this is that we must be holy because God is holy.  This is the essence of godly living.  To be holy means to obey and honor Him in “all manner of conversation” – in every facet of life.

In what ways am I obeying God’s command to be holy?  In what ways do I need to be holy?

Godliness / Week 2

Day 1 / Psalm 32:1-11

When David wrote this psalm, he was not in the best spiritual condition.  His conscience “roared” within him, reminding him of unconfessed sin.  The guilt weighed heavily upon him and actually made him physically sick.  When David realized his sinfulness, he did not try to hide from it; he acknowledged it and confessed it to God.  As a godly man, he readily confessed his sins when he became aware of them.

Is there any sin weighing heavily upon me, which I need to confess?

Day 2 /Psalm 24:3-6

This psalm zeroes in on the need for purity in the believer’s life.  Only one who is pure receives God’s fullest blessings.  David first mentions the need for “clean Hands.”  This refers to the things we do – to our outward life.  Then, David singles out the need for a “pure heart.”  This refers to what we are – to our inner life.

According to God’s standard, do I have “clean hands” and a “pure Heart”?  In what areas do I need to clean my hands and purify my heart?

Day 3 / Ephesians 6:18

The prayer of the godly is not only a prayer of repentance, but includes all kinds of prayers and requests.  With this in mind, we must be alert and keep on praying always, for all those who have been redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Am I spiritually alert?  Am I consistently praying for other believers?  For others in my family?

Day 4 / Mark 11:22-24

The prayer of the godly is a prayer of faith.  Jesus taught His disciples that faith in God can move mountains.  He told them that whatever a Christian asks for in prayer he will receive, if he truly believes God and asks according to God’s will.

Is there a “mountain” I would like to have moved?  Will I believe God to move it?  Do I qualify as a “godly” person (having met God’s condition to have prayers answered)?

Day 5 / I John 5:14-15

These wonderful verses reinforce what Jesus taught in Mark 11:22-24 regarding the power of faith.  John’s message is quite clear.  To anything we ask according to God’s will, He hears and responds.  For this reason we can have complete confidence (assurance) when we approach our Father in prayer.

Am I confident in my prayer life?  Why?  How has God answered my prayers recently?

Day 6 / James 5:16-18

Sometimes it is easy to get the idea that the believers we read about in the bible were “super-saints” – that they were somehow a lot different from us.  But this is not so.  As James says about Elijah, one of the most prominent of the Old Testament prophets, he was a man just like us.  What he did, we can do.  Well, what did Elijah do?  He prayed with a sincere belief in God, and God granted his requests.  James’ message to us is that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man (a godly Christian) is powerful and effective.

Is my prayer life powerful and effective?  What would make it more powerful and effective?

Godliness / Week 3

Day 1 / I Timothy 4:1-10

Physical exercise is important to the proper function of the human body, but more important than physical exercise is spiritual exercise.  The purpose of physical exercise is to achieve physical fitness.  The purpose of spiritual exercise is to achieve spiritual fitness.  This fitness is called “godliness.”  Paul admonished Timothy to “exercise (himself) unto godliness.”  This is vital advice for all Christians.

What specific things can I do to exercise myself unto godliness?

Day 2 / Philippians 2:14-16

At one time or another, most of us give in to the temptation to complain or argue.  Something or someone rubs us the wrong way, so we react negatively.  This can be very damaging, for it can seriously affect one’s testimony before the world.  Part of being a godly believer is refraining from complaining and arguing – just like Jesus did.  When treated so unjustly, He did not lash out, but patiently endured the mistreatment.  He gave no one the opportunity to speak poorly of Him.

Do I complain or argue?  How is it affecting my testimony?

Day 3 /II Timothy 2:19-21

Every Christian ought to sincerely desire to be used of God.  Certainly every Christian can be used of God; but many are not, and the reason is that they are unfit vessels.  Their lives are unclean because of sin.  Only by turning away from every form of sin are we cleansed spiritually and made fit for the Master’s service.

Is my vessel unfit in any way?  How can I keep my vessel clean?

Day 4 / II Corinthians 7:1

Knowing that we have been given great promises by God, we must purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit.  And, out of reverence for God (consciously aware of His presence) we must strive for perfection, which is full Christian maturity.

Is there anything which now contaminates me physically or spiritually?  How can I rid myself of it?

Day 5 / I Peter 2:9-10

As God’s children, we are a “peculiar people.”  This does not mean that we are weird or unusual.  Rather, it means that we are special to God, set apart for His purposes.

Realizing that I am special to God, how should I then live?  What do others see in me that is special which shows them that I am set apart for God’s purposes?

Day 6 / I Timothy 6:8-11

The Word of God is filled with positives and negatives.  It tells us not only what to do, but what not to do.  This verse includes both kinds of commands.  Negatively, it tells us to “flee.”  Positively, it tells us to “follow.”

What things does God want me to “flee”?  What things does He want me to “follow”?

Godliness / Week 4

Day 1 / II Peter 2:1-9

This important passage, which is very similar to II Timothy 4:1-10, is a comparison between the ungodly false teacher and the godly believer.  Peter’s main emphasis is on the result of a godly life.  In the end, the godly man is always delivered, while the ungodly is punished.  This is documented with the examples of Noah and Lot, who were delivered from destruction because of their godliness.

What are some ungodly things God has delivered me from?

Day 2 / Philippians 2:5-8

To become a godly person – a Christ-like person – one must have the attitude of Jesus.  Writing to the Philippian Christians, Paul urged them to have this attitude when he said, “let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…” (v. 5).

What is the “mind” – the attitude – of Jesus?  It is an attitude of self-denial (He “made Himself of no reputation” v. 7).  It is an attitude of servitude (He “took upon Him the form of a servant” v. 7).  It is an attitude of humility (He “humbled Himself” v. 8).  It is an attitude of obedience (He “became obedient unto death” v. 8).

How is my attitude like Jesus’ attitude?  How does my attitude need to change to be more like His?

Day 3 / Psalm 91:14-16

David was a godly man.  Of course, he had his faults, like we all do; but he confessed his wrong doings and received God’s forgiveness.  Because David truly loved Him, God delivered him from the oppression of his enemies.  He responded to David’s prayers for help.

How am I showing my love to God?  Do I readily confess my sin to Him?  How am I experiencing His deliverance?

Day 4 / Psalm 33:18-19

God keeps His eye on those that fear Him – those who respect and honor Him in every possible way.  These are the godly, and God promises to deliver them.  He will protect and sustain them through every difficulty.

How has God protected and sustained me recently?

Day 5 /Psalm 34:15-19

Even good Christian people do not escape troubles, but God is aware of what they are going through, and He delivers them out of every situation.  He is fully aware of every affliction His children endure, and He does not allow them to be crushed by their difficulties.  His grace delivers them.

How has God delivered me through trouble?  How did He make me more, godly through it?

Day 6 / II Corinthians 1:9-10

God’s deliverance covers all dimensions of life: past, present and future.  Those who have believed and received Jesus Christ can say without reservation: “I have been delivered…I am being delivered…I will be delivered.”  In this verse “delivered” means the same as “saved.”  God’s salvation is threefold.  He saves (delivers) us from sin’s penalty (past), sin’s power (present), and sin’s presence (future).

Have I been delivered from sin’s penalty?  How am I now being delivered from sin’s power?
