Introduction to Genesis
Genesis is the first of five books of the Bible called “The Pentateuch”. The word Pentateuch comes from two Greek words which mean five books. The word Genesis means the beginning. Each of the first five books of the Bible is teaching God’s Word for fallen man. Genesis = The beginning shows man’s fallen condition and his need of redemption.
As you read it, you will see the innocent dying for the guilty. You begin to see, as some have said, “the red line of redemption.” You see the blood!
Moses is the author of Genesis and the other four books of the Pentateuch. You may wonder how he could write Genesis, since he was not there. Read in the New Testament, 2 Peter 1:21. The author of each book of the Bible was used of God to write the scripture as the Holy Ghost moved upon him. See Jeremiah 1:9; Ezekiel 3:17; 2 Samuel 23:2; and Acts 1:16.
Remember as you study the Old Testament that it may not apply to you as a believer. You can make an application. By that I mean, “Abraham went out, not knowing where he was going”. Sometimes we as believers must step out in faith, then the Lord will show us where to go as he showed Abraham.
You will see many “shadows and types” of the Lord Jesus Christ as you read through the Old Testament. It has been said that the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed, and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. This is why we study the New Testament first.
If you have problems believing Genesis 1:1; then you will have problems believing John 1:1. Nowhere does God tell us where He came from or anything about His past. He had no past, He has always been. We believe by faith and one day our faith will be fact as we look upon Him.
As you study, use Psalm 119:18 as your prayer. He will show you many wonderful things out of His Word. May you see Jesus concealed in each scriptural story you study in the Old Testament.
