INTRODUCTION TO NEHEMIAH
Nehemiah’s name means “Comfort”. It is a picture of one who stands loyal to God and the scripture no matter what he faces. He was a praying man, recorded at least four times. His phrase was “the good hand of my God is upon me.” (2:8, 18) He led a party of Jews to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls. He was not a priest, nor prophet; just a man burdened for his city of Jerusalem and his people. When he heard of the condition of his beloved city and its people, he wept, fasted, mourned and prayed unto God. (See Neh. 1:5-6). Also, note that he placed himself with the people who had disobeyed God. (1:6- 7; “I; we”) Just as Daniel did (9:13-19). He rose up and did something about the walls. He took a group to Jerusalem and working on the walls, he with stood much opposition. He knew scripture and used it as he prayed. Note also as you study this book, the repair of the gates. There were twelve of them that were burned and much debris. There were lazy nobles and those that wanted the work to stop. But Nehemiah stayed on course, letting nothing nor anyone to stop the work God called him to do. He was asked to come meet with those who opposed him. His reply was Neh. 6:3; “I am doing a great work, so I cannot come down.” Every work of God is important, small or large. He had left a fine position, the king’s cupbearer, to do the work of God. He overcame ridicule by confidence in God, not man. He overcame conspiracy by watchfulness, fasting, and prayer. He overcame those who said he was selfish and greedy by self-sacrifice. This book is a great example to Christians today to keep on keeping on in the work of the LORD.
