INTRODUCTION TO JOSHUA
Joshua’s name means Jehovah is Salvation or Jehovah Saviour. He was the son of Nun from the tribe of Ephraim. He was to succeed Moses. Moses had trained him to be the next leader. His name in the Greek is Jesus. He is a type of Jesus in that he is leading God’s people into the promised land. His name can be written in several ways – Oshea (Num. 13:8), Jehoshua (Num. 13:16) and Hoshea (Deut. 32:44).
Joshua was one of the twelve spies, along with Caleb, who were chosen to spy out the land. He and Caleb gave a good report saying, “…we are well able to overcome it.” (Numbers 13:30) Joshua and Caleb were the only two who came out of Egypt and entered the promised land. For forty years, he and Caleb wandered in the wilderness with a bunch of complainers. That takes great faith in God’s Word. He believed what God had told them.
The book of Joshua covers about twenty years. In this book are great verses of the promises of God and Joshua’s determination. See chapter 1:6-8. Verse 8 has the only place the word success occurs. If you want success notice, verse 8; educate yourself in God’s Word (the law); meditate (think on it) day and night; observe to do it; be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, nor dismayed because the LORD thy God is with thee. Paul confirmed this as the Holy Spirit moved upon him in Phil. 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” The word “strengtheneth” means “to empower, enable, be and make strong”. God truly empowered Joshua for his faith and determination. Joshua 24:14-15 He told His people to fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and in truth. Do not serve false gods. “…choose you this day whom ye will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
Each one of us must come to this place in our life, and remember, true success is in the eyes of the LORD and not in man.
