24. Jeremiah

Description

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH

God sent Jeremiah to the people of Judah. Israel (the Northern Kingdom) had already fallen. Judah had been out of touch with the living God for some time. God had warned them repeatedly. Now it was judgment. Jeremiah, whose name meant, “one whom Jehovah sets”, preached during the time when Josiah was king until the carrying away into Babylon. He was left there and later, against his will, carried to Egypt. He was divinely called to be a prophet. He knew from the beginning that Judah would not listen and repent. (Jeremiah 7:27) He is best known for chapter 18 concerning the clay and the potter. He received many signs and visions. An example of one is the rod of an almond tree. (Jer. 1:11) However, one thing that stays in my mind is chapter 5 verse 1. “Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man…” God is still looking for someone to stand even in the difficult days. So Jeremiah preached to the people, the priest, and the King, but they would not repent.

He wept much over the sins of Judah; therefore, he was called “the weeping prophet”. His family, neighbors, friends, people, and the King rejected him. He got discouraged and said he would not make mention of Him (see Jer. 20:9). God’s words were burning in his heart. He could not stop preaching and warning the people. His heart was burning and broken for his people. He also wrote the book of Lamentations and asked a very important question in Lamentations 1:12. “Is it nothing to you who pass by and see my sorrow? ” There are many phases in the book of Jeremiah that are important even for this day. However, Jeremiah ends by telling us of restoration and to see the state prince, Christ, we need to get on the potter’s wheel and let Him mold us to His image. “Blest Potter, to thy hands I yield, all marred and broken, scattered, peeled; my stubbornness is now resigned. Mold me to what Thou hast designed. ” Study this book closely and allow The Potter to mold you.
