Introduction to I & II Samuel
The book of Samuel gives us the personal history of Samuel. He is the last judge of Israel. He is also the first prophet that God raised up. Israel and her priests had become wicked and greedy. Samuel was sent to awaken Israel. Israel had been ruled by leaders chosen by God. Israel wanted to be like other nations and have a king. They were first ruled by leaders such as Moses, Joshua, and several different judges. When they asked for a king, they were told that a king would make them servants. This desire was their downfall. When you do this lesson, notice how it slowly gets worse and worse.
At the very beginning, we are introduced to Eli, the priest at that time, and Hannah, Samuel’s mother. Samuel started out at a very young age serving in the Temple, the house of God. His mother had prayed for him and had promised God to give him back to Him to serve. Samuel is a great example to us as believers. We should serve the Lord in the church. Whether that be a local church or chapel, be involved in helping do what needs to be done. Many want to start at the top, but this is our own selfish pride and ego. Do the “lowly” jobs and trust the Lord to raise you up. It has been said, “be careful as you climb the ladder of success, who you step on now, you may meet on your way down.” Samuel was respectful to Eli and was obedient when God spoke to him.
Samuel preached and wrote the message to awaken the people. They had rejected God as their leader, going their own way and worshipping false gods. Beware of who your “god” becomes whether gold, silver, riches or material things. Material things are not wrong in themselves, but when put first before God they become wrong. God is the only one to have first place in our lives. As you study Samuel, our prayer should be “Thank you Lord for all you have given me. May I use it wisely and always worship you solely.”
