“THAT YE MAY KNOW”

The key verse which we are using from God’s Word is I John 5:13, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; THAT YE MAY KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” There are five things in this verse which we must know in order to understand eternal salvation:

I.   We must know about the Bible.

II.  We must know about God.

III.  We must know about the Son of God.

IV.  We must know about how to believe on the Son of God.

V.  We must know about eternal life.

KNOWING ABOUT — THE BIBLE

Our verse, 1 John 5:13 states, “These things have I written unto you.” Those things written to us are the Word of God or the Bible.

IT IS FOREVER — MATTHEW 24:35: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

IT IS FROM GOD TO MAN — II TIMOTHY 3:16: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…”

IT IS PURE WITHOUT ERROR — PSALM 12:6, 7: “The words of the Lord are pure words…”

IT IS ALWAYS THE SAME — PSALM 119:89: “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.”

IT TEACHES ABOUT FAITH IN GOD — ROMANS 10:17: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

IT WAS GIVEN SO THAT WE MIGHT KNOW HOW TO BELIEVE ON JESUS — JOHN 20:31: “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”

KNOWING ABOUT — GOD

In our verse, I John 5:13, it says, “…That ye may believe on the Son of God.” Before we can understand who the Son of God is, we must know who God is and a little about what God is like.

CAN WE PROVE THERE IS A GOD?

Our human bodies prove there is a God. Psalm 139:14, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” Genesis 2:7, “And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

All of creation proves there is a God. Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” Romans 1:20, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”

Our thoughts prove there is a God. Romans 2:15, “Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;”

The Bible proves there is a God. Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

WHAT IS THIS GOD LIKE?

God is eternal, He always has been. Psalm 90:2, “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.”

God is always the same, He never changes. Malachi 3:6, “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

God has all power in this earth. Job 42:2, “I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be witholden from thee.” Jeremiah 32:27, “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?” Matthew 19:26, “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

God is everywhere; there is not a place God is not. Psalm 139:7-8, “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.” Jeremiah 23:23, “Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?”

God knows everything about everybody. I Chronicles 28:9, “…for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts….” Psalm 94:11, “The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.” II Chronicles 16:9, “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth….” I John 3:20, “For, if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.”

God is holy; there is no sin or uncleanness in Him. Psalm 99:9, “Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.” I Samuel 2:2, “There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.” Habakkuk 1:13, “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:…”

God is the only true God, there is no other. Jeremiah 10:10, “But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king:…” Acts 14:15, “…and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:” Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:” Isaiah 44:6, “Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.” Isaiah 45:21, “…and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me.”

KNOWING ABOUT — THE SON OF GOD, JESUS

Now that we have explained who God is and a little about Him, we must know who the Son of God, or Jesus, is in order to know about eternal life.

JESUS WAS THE SON OF GOD BEFORE HIS BIRTH.

He created all things that exist. Colossians 1:16, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth….” Revelation 4:11, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

He was before all things in His existence. Colossians 1:17, “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.” Micah 5:2, “But thou Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been of old, from everlasting.”

He is God. Isaiah 45:18, “For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

JESUS WAS THE SON OF GOD AFTER HIS BIRTH.

It was told by the prophets that He would be born. Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

The birth of Jesus happened just as they said it would. Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.”

The Son was sent to be our Saviour of the whole world. 1 John 4:14, “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.” John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

He was the Son of God, just like God. John 5:18, “Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.” John 10:29, “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD NOW.

He died, was buried and rose again, just for us. I Corinthians 15:1-4, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures;”

He returned to heaven where He came from. Acts 1:9, “And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”

God has now highly exalted Him in heaven. Philippians 2:9-11, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

He is seated at the right hand of God. Hebrews 10:12, “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”

JESUS THE SON OF GOD died for me so that I might go to heaven.

KNOWING ABOUT — HOW DO I BELIEVE?

At this point we believe that the Bible is God’s Word to us, that the God of Heaven is the only true God and Jesus, God’s Son, came to die for the whole world. We must know how to “believe on the name of the Son of God” as our verse, I John 5:13, has told us.

YOU

MUST

REALIZE

YOUR

CONDITION

You are a sinner. (Sin, the very things that are against the Holy nature of God.) Romans 3:10, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Like sheep going astray. Isaiah 53:6, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Without strength. Romans 5:6, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Enemy of God. Romans 5:10, “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”

Far from God. Ephesians 2:13, “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”

YOU

MUST

SEE

YOURSELF

HELPLESS

Dead in trespasses and sins. Ephesians 2:1, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;”

Condemned by God as an unbeliever. John 3:18, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

The wrath (anger) of God abideth on you. John 3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

Servant to sin. Romans 6:17, “But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.”

With a sin debt to pay. Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

YOU

CANNOT

SAVE

YOURSELF

Not by doing good things. Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” Galatians 2:16, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” Romans 3:20, “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Titus 3:5, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”

YOU MUST BELIEVE

ON THE LORD

JESUS CHRIST

TO BE SAVED FROM

YOUR SIN

Believe that He died for you. I Corinthians 15:3, “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;”

Believe that He rose from the dead. I Corinthians 15:4, “And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Believe that He now lives in heaven. Revelation 1:18, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

Believe with your heart. Romans 10:10, “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Believe to the saving of your soul. Hebrews 10:39, “But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”

Believe by receiving the Lord. John 1:12, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

If you are in need of the Savior to be saved, follow this simple prayer — “Lord Jesus, I realize that I am a sinner, helpless without you. I know that you are the Son of God who died, was buried and was raised from the dead for my salvation. I ask you to come into my heart and save me. I believe on you today. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus name, Amen.”

KNOWING ABOUT — ETERNAL LIFE

Now that you have put your trust in the Son of God to save you and give you eternal life, you must know some things about eternal life. The Bible clearly states that we are saved from now on or forever. When one speaks of living forever you must understand that it is speaking of spiritually and not physically or fleshly. The Bible says that at the time of death the body goes back to the dust of the earth from where it came and the soul and spirit return unto God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:7, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Let us see what the Bible says about our new life in Christ.

KNOW I AM SAVED FOREVER BECAUSE:

GOD says so. Titus 1:2, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”

THE BIBLE says so. John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” I Peter 1:4-5, “To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” John 5:24, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 6:37, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” Hebrews 13:5, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

THE SPIRIT says so. Romans 5:5, “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 8:16, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” Ephesians 1:13, “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” Ephesians 4:30, “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”

God wants us to know that we are saved forever. II Timothy 1:12, “…for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” I John 5:13, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that YE MAY KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
